HRRL Wimborne

The eight Farnham Runners who supported their team in the last race of the Hampshire cross-country season had a good day despite the dismal, damp weather. Some took advantage of a reduced field to record personal best positions. Hamworthy Harriers hosted the Hampshire Road League Wimborne course, which was 6 km for the ladies (two laps) and 9km (three laps) for the men.

The first two Farnham men were just one position from their PBs. Captain Dan Smith led in his team for the fourth time this year in a fine 67th (34.37) while Charles Ashby finished 86th in 35.51. Andy Tweed took over a minute from his time on this course last year to deduct 10 places from his previous best score (125th, 38.54) and won a head to head battle with Terry Steadman who took the next place (126th, 39.00). Although five are needed for a complete team the club finished 8th in Division Two over the series, so stay in this division for next year.

The ladies were successful in raising a complete team. Jane Georghiou (25.24) equalled her club record of 17th set over six years ago. Sarah Edson had an excellent run as she has just returned from China where she could train only on a treadmill. She also repeated a PB of 22nd in 25.40. Jo Edson compoleted the team score with 44th (27.57). Caroline Freeman stepped in at the last minute to make a team of three for the veterans’ section (71st, 32.07). Over the series the ladies came a creditable 8th out of all the teams in the league, their veterans taking an even better 4th slot.

The few who stayed for the lunch and results after the Today’s Runner Winter League penultimate race at Manor Farm Country Park, organised by Stubbington Green A.C cheered a treble victory: both men’s and ladies’ teams took the honours and so Farnham Runners topped the overall result.

Back in serious training, Mark Taylor placed an excellent 3rd, with Dan Smith never far behind for 4th, a new PB. Charles Ashby made the top ten for the first time (10th). The competition between Andy Tweed (33rd, PB) and Terry Steadman (34th, PB) continued in relentless fashion with Tweed just keeping the edge to the line and both making the winning Farnham team. New member Simon Clyde (64th) impressed in his first run in Farnham colours.

The first two ladies repeated the men’s pattern, Jane Georghiou taking 3rd slot and Sarah Edson 4th (PB). Angela Epps was just out of the top ten (11th, PB) to complete the team result, with Jo Edson (17th) and Lindsay Bamford (21st) providing the back-up.

Other Farnham results: Nick Hill 76, Richard Cieslik 107, Bob Brimicombe 126.
Caroline Freeman 39, Diane Cox 47.
