World Masters Athletics Championships

Farnham Runner Jane Georghiou represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the first time, in the recent World Masters Athletics Championships in Clermont-Ferrand, France and came away with two medals.

The competition attracted almost 4000 entrants from 65 countries, most entering several events. Medals were awarded in each 5year age group from 35 upwards, the oldest competitor being 95 years of age.

Although mainly an indoor championship, Jane chose only to take part in the cross-country and the half marathon. The 8km cross-country was a flat course around sports fields and she was soon surprised to find herself in 3rd spot in the W55 ladies category. She held on to this for a bronze medal in a time of 34 mins 24 secs, heading a British trio which won a convincing team gold with 3rd, 4th and 6th places and a total time over 12 minutes quicker than nearest rivals, Germany.

Snow on the morning of the half marathon cleared by mid-day to give good conditions for the 4 lap race. Jane was third W55 until the last lap but had to settle for 4th in a time of 1.32.54.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland came 3rd in the total medal table with 127 medals after Germany (259) and hosts France (193).

With no selection restrictions anyone over 35 is eligible to take part in Masters (veterans) national and international competitions. Full details of forthcoming events can be found on the website www.bmaf.org.uk
