About Farnham Runners
We run… We run for fitness and we run for fun!
Formed in 1985, we are friendly, social running club with currently have over 200 members. There is a wide range of ages, abilities and aspirations in our membership so there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Farnham Runner.
We train in and around the scenic Bourne Woods and the beautiful commons of Frensham, Tilford, Hankley and Crooksbury amongst others, as well as making forays into Farnham Park and over to Aldershot.
We also attend a wide variety of local and not so local races, compete in two leagues and every autumn host (and run in) the Alice Holt Forest Races.
The activities we offer include:
- Cross country and road race leagues
- Club competitions
- Training sessions including coached sessions
- A beginners course for those new to running
- Use of Charterhouse School Athletics track for training
- A variety of social events – not all involving running!
Cross country and road racing
We compete in two leagues:
- Southern Cross Country League (SXCL)
Races on a Sunday, once per month from October through to February or March. - Hampshire Road Race League (HRRL)
Races on Saturdays or Sundays between September and June.
Club competitions
Our Grand Prix League runs throughout the year to encourage friendly competition within the club and runners of all abilities to participate in the two leagues that we compete in. There are many prizes and trophies that can be won by anyone.
The Club Championship is an annual event usually held in June around the Bourne Woods 10km course. A tough race, but with a welcoming BBQ afterwards.
The Club Handicap is held around Christmas where this is the chance to run against and perhaps beat those ‘racing snakes’ on more even terms.
Training and courses
We hold training sessions four times a week throughout the year.
We meet at our Club House on Wednesdays and Sundays for training runs, on Monday evenings there is coached speed and interval training session on the track at Aldershot Military Stadium, and on Tuesday evenings an ‘Improve Your Speed’ coached session including grass track and on-road hill/flat sessions depending on the season.
Our Get Me Started course is specifically designed to take you through to running a 5km (3 mile) distance over a 9 week period, will also introduce you to the club, its club sessions and your fellow runners, and includes club membership.
Socialising
The last Wednesday of every month is usually Club Supper night (unless we’re off racing somewhere) where we get to try out our fellow club members’ cuisine.
On an ad-hoc basis we go out to local (and not so local) pubs for food, games and perhaps some running and have weekends away to attend not so local races.
Around Christmas and New Year we hold an Annual Club Awards Dinner and also the ever-popular ‘Mince Pie’ run for those serious about their drinking and running…
