HRRL Winchester 10K, Edinburgh Marathon and Yateley 10K

HRRL Winchester 10K

An excellent Division One third place for the ladies and fifth for the men was the reward for the consistent efforts of Farnham Runners in the Hampshire Road Race League this season.

The final race of the ten was an undulating mainly rural 10kilometer route from Riverside Park in Winchester. In the end of series tally the 7 best races count for the ladies and 8 for the men. Tables are calculated for both A and B teams.

In only his second race in club colours Matthew Nutt showed himself to be a possible strong contender in the forthcoming club championship. He sped round the route, despite the hills and hot weather, in a splendid time of 37mins 23secs to secure 22nd place (7th senior) in a very competitive race, Charles Ashby clocked an impressive 38.50 for 40th of 550 finishers to take 6th in the M40 category. Andy Eakins was never far behind with another fine performance in 39.11 (16th senior). Newcomer Spencer Ward (39.30, 16th M35) completed the A team that came a notable 4th in division one for this race.

Returning to fitness Dan Smith (39.56, 17th M35) led in the B team, crossing the line just two seconds ahead of Bob Brimicombe (39.58) who was pleased with his 4th in the M45 category. Steve Gillingham (42.27) and Mike Ashworth (42.51) were the 3rd and 4th members of the B team that was 4th of 30 teams, helping the club to a final series position of 5th in the B table.

A strong turn out of ten other Farnham men supported their team.

Other men’s times: Tim Cummins 43.37, Terry Steadman 44.00 (7th M60), Paul Beesley 45.38, Richard Cieslik 47.15, Steve Payne 47.21, Rob Murdoch 47.38, Hillary Carter 49.38, PS 53.19, Richard Sheppard 59.17, Mike Walberton 63.18.

Jane Georghiou (44.16 ,14th lady, 1st F55) was followed Lindsay Bamford (48.13, 12th F40) and Caroline Freeman (53.14) The trio clinched 5th place in the top flight for the A team on the day. Only Diane Cox (55.44) represented the B team but the ladies still took 12th slot of 27 over the series.

In the individual series tables Jane Georghiou and Angela Epps were pleased to finish 6th and 7th lady respectively. For the men Charles Ashby came 24th and Steve Kitney 26th.

Edinburgh Marathon

Five members of the club travelled to Edinburgh for the marathon. Ian Carley was on target till 20 miles for a sub 3hour time but had to settle for 3.04.50. Alan Froud (3.46.15) took a huge 20 minutes from his previous best while Colin Goody was safely inside 4hours (3.56.35). Emma Doven improved her time by 12 minutes to a worthy 4.15.32, while Helen Cathie ran her second marathon in six weeks (4.43.26).

Yateley 10K series

Farnham Runners was also well represented in the first of the Yateley Wednesday evening 10km races with 24 finishers. Mark Taylor recorded an excellent 36.42, (17th) while Graham Wilton, close behind him in 36.50, took 3rd prize in the M40 section. Terry Steadman (42.40) placed 2nd among the M60s with Jane Georghiou 1st F55 (43.20).
